Job losses in tourism sector during COVID-19


GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF TOURISM RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO.313 ANSWERED ON 15.09.2020 JOB LOSSES IN TOURISM SECTOR DURING COVID-19 313. DR. AMAR PATNAIK: Will the Minister of TOURISM be pleased to state: (a) whether Government has an estimate of the number of people who lost jobs in the tourism and allied sectors during the COVID19 lockdown period starting March 2020 till July 2020, if so, the details thereof; (b) if not, the reasons therefor; and (c) whether Government is planning to take any steps to alleviate the strife of lost work in the tourism sector owing to COVID-19, if so, the details thereof? ANSWER MINISTER OF STATE FOR TOURISM (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) (SHRI PRAHLAD SINGH PATEL) (a) & (b): No formal study has been instituted for assessment of the impact on the Tourism sector and job loss. However, several rounds of discussions and brainstorming sessions with industry stakeholders indicate massive loss of revenue, foreign exchange and jobs. In view of the highly unorganized nature of the sector, the impact in numerical terms can only be ascertained in due course. (c): The stimulus packages announced by the various agencies and ministries of Government of India are given in Annexure-I. Further steps which have been taken to overcome the crisis caused by Covid-19 pandemic in the tourism sector is given in AnnexureII.
